Anchorage, AK – Bristol Bay Industrial, LLC is pleased to announce the appointment of Cody Gauer as president and chief executive officer of Peak Oilfield Service Company, effective April 9.

Gauer is 13 year veteran of the upstream oil and gas industry, of which the last ten have been spent in the heart of Alaska’s oil patch. He previously served as the production manager for Eni Petroleum’s arctic offshore assets and held multiple positions at ConocoPhillips Alaska, including senior production engineer and planning analyst for their Colville and Kuparuk River Units. In his new role, Gauer will have executive oversight of the company’s North American operations and will be responsible for developing and executing a strategic plan to reposition Peak in the ever-changing oil and gas market.

“In order for North Slope producers to survive the changing market, service companies like Peak need to drive innovation and bring the next generation of leadership,” said Mark D. Nelson, president and chief executive officer of Bristol Bay Industrial, LLC. “Cody’s appointment is a prime example of how BBI is changing the way our member companies contract for services. As a former E&P professional who knows and understands the challenges operators face, Cody’s insight will be instrumental as Peak looks to better serve its clients with fresh thinking and cost effective ideas.”

Prior to relocating to Alaska, Gauer spent time in Wyoming and Texas working the fields for Encana, a leading North American energy producer. Gauer graduated with honors from Montana Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering. In his spare time, Gauer consults as a subject matter expert on oil and gas technologies, market trends, and insights for major global management consulting firms and various financial institutions.

Anchorage, Alaska – Andeavor, formerly Tesoro, selected Peak Oilfield Service Company as one of eleven suppliers recognized during Andeavor’s Supplier Recognition awards banquet in San Antonio, Texas on September 10, 2017. Peak was recognized at the event for its superior safety performance while drastically improving the efficiency of processes through ideas and suggestions at Andeavor’s refinery facility in Nikiski, Alaska.

Peak, as noted in Andeavor’s safety award endorsement, “provided exceptional handling of mooring and connection at the Kenai Pipeline. This is just one example of [the company’s] extraordinary performance.”

Yet, their performance was not without challenges. According to Peak’s Kenai Project Manager, Joe Warchola, “the KPL dock crew consistently improved on the time it took to transfer product from tankers while facing tough challenges like strong Cook Inlet tides, ice flows during winter months, and emergency releases from the dock. They overcame all of these obstacles while exceeding expectations and doing it all without sacrificing safety.”

The endorsement also went on to say that Peak “demonstrated innovation and value delivery through ideas and suggestions on improving performance and safety procedures at operating areas.” This was reflected in the improved safety performance of Peak’s employees at the refinery and recognized by Andeavor’s senior management at the local level. “Several of our employees have been recognized for improving performance in the administration and drafting departments with innovative ideas. Another employee was even given a Hero Award for stopping another contractor from performing unsafe actions on the job site,” said Warchola. “Our employees’ daily activities at the refinery continue to show Peak’s commitment to safety, and our alignment with the client’s core values of safety, health, and the environment.”

Tom Pellegrom, Peak’s Cook Inlet area manager, gave his own words of praise for the group stating, “This award shows the pride and dedication Peak employees carry each day to our client base across all of our assets. The team representing these [Andeavor] assets have raised the bar in safety performance and innovation during challenging times. My personal congratulations to the entire Kenai team on their dedication to continuous improvement.”

Peak has been Andeavor’s “contractor of choice” for operations and maintenance services at the Kenai refinery since 2007.

Peak was the previous, two-time incumbent for this scope of work.

The continuation of this contract signals more than just a general contractor/client relationship. Both companies share a common purpose to strengthen the local community through economic development, and for responsible resource development.

Peak’s operations on the peninsula began in 1991 as a small office offering construction and maintenance services to the local petrochemical industry. Since then, and in response to a growing demand, the company has expanded its footprint to include drilling support, trucking, facility operations and maintenance support, crane services, and project management. While things have changed dramatically for the company, one thing has remained the same – steady employment for a robust pool of highly-trained craftsmen who call the Kenai Peninsula home.

“Our past success in completing several large scale plant expansions with local labor demonstrates our ability to handle all of our client’s needs at the Kenai refinery, and helped tremendously when bidding for this contract,” said Tom Pellegrom, Peak’s Cook Inlet Area Manager. “By keeping the work with a local company, the client is providing 30 of our craftsmen with steady employment at a time when the industry is facing its most difficult challenges. Plus, our shared commitment to the environment and responsible development means the refinery’s impact on the community and the surrounding ecosystems are limited.”

But on the North Slope, ice roads offer the best, most cost-effective means of moving heavy equipment, materials, and personnel through road-less areas, particularly when those areas are located offshore.

One North Slope operator relies on Peak Oilfield Service Company’s expertise to build these frozen works of critical infrastructure as a way to access the Spy Island Drill Site, a man-made gravel island located four miles off of Alaska’s northernmost coast.

Beginning in early to mid-December, Peak’s ice road crew expertly crafts the road using sea water from the Beaufort Sea. Starting at Oliktok Point, the crew uses augers mounted on LATV pumper units to drill through the ice pack and to flood the area with a slushy mix of snow and water, building up the surveyed route.

Guiding equipment over the ice pack, the crew layers, smooths, and shapes the road with LATV Pump Units and Tuckers as they go – layer by layer, mile by mile – until the ice road reaches its final island destination. Construction is complete when the ice thickness reaches an even 72 inches, and ramps and storm surge berms are in place. Subcontractor Lounsbury and Associates provides survey support and Ausenco Engineering provides technical guidance to the ice road crew.

Currently, Peak is halfway through its second season of building and maintaining ice roads for the Italian operator.

“Construction of the ice road [to Spy Island] is always a pleasure,” says Project Manager Ian McCool. “We have been given the opportunity to construct an over-the-ocean road and show off some of the specialized equipment Peak has available, but not normally used with conventional ice roads. Everyone on the crew truly enjoys this work and the opportunity to show off their skill sets.”
